Alternatives to Cling Film, Tin Foil & Plastic Sandwich Bags

We’ve come a long way in our relationship with plastic over the past few years. There is no denying that is one of the most heavily relied upon materials in our day-to-day lives, and this has to change.

Plastic bag usage is decreasing in the UK thanks to the 5p plastic bag charge in supermarkets, but we’ve still got a long way to go. The UK uses over 2,500 tonnes of plastic every year, and we recycle just 44.9% of that plastic in the UK.

Aside from plastic water bottles and shopping bags, plastic sandwich bags and cling film make up another big proportion of plastic waste. Just how much is unknown, as it’s underreported leaving us with no idea how much is being used or recycled.

We get it, with having lunch on-the-go usually five times a week, we need something easy and convenient. Especially if we’re making school lunches too. But that’s why we made beeswax wraps! Not only do beeswax wraps work in a similar way (they cover your sandwiches and snacks, easy for on-the-go), but they are also reusable. This makes them a surprisingly cost effective alternative too.

Reusable Sandwich Wraps

Easy, peasy and self-sealing. So are beeswax wraps. Plastic sandwich bags can only really be used once, meaning you’ll be buying at least one box of 60 sandwich bags at least five times a year for one person’s lunch, which is roughly £15 a year for something that is used once and thrown into landfill.

Our Three Medium and Four Combo packs include the right size wraps to cover at least two people’s lunches. Beeswax Wraps are the ideal reusable sandwich wrap. They are easy to clean, they last for at least a year and can be rewaxed to last even longer. At £20 for two people, you’re not only making a money saving, but you’re helping the planet too!

If you want plastic sandwich bags as a catchall for snacks on-the-go, make the switch to our Three Reusable Bags. Made from organic cotton in an assortment of prints, we’ve made three sizes to work for everything from small snacks to sandwiches.

Alternatives to Cling Film

The devil, and the reason we were so persistent in our making of beeswax wraps! Cling film- or plastic wrap- is one of the worst single-use consumer plastics in the world today.

Bloody difficult to use, hard to successfully cover and seal, and the epitome of everything wrong with single-use plastic. The majority of cling film ends up in landfills across the UK where it does not decompose, doing nothing but pollute.

When we first started making beeswax wraps, it was to find a direct replacement for cling film. We wanted something self-sealing, flexible and non-bulky for covering our sandwiches and leftovers. And we succeeded!

Beeswax wraps are flexible and self-sealing, just like cling film, but they let your food breathe (bye-bye sweaty sandwiches). They are also reusable and completely biodegradable. We use only natural materials to make our wraps. Just pop them in your compost or use as eco-friendly firelighters.

Alternatives to Tin Foil

Also known as aluminum foil, the entire process of making and using tin foil is bad from start to finish. From extracting the raw materials needed for the foil from the earth, to transporting it to refineries, to the process of refining in itself. An excessive amount of energy is required, with vast amounts of waste created in the process.

Foil is also only single use. Once it’s scrunched and folded, it becomes more and more useless.

The less we use aluminium foil, the less demand there is to make it. So make the switch away from foil, cling film, or sandwich bags and towards reusable alternatives like beeswax wraps, vegan food wraps, and reusable cotton bags and containers.

Why use Beeswax Wraps instead?

  • Beeswax Wraps are made from all-natural materials that are biodegradable.

  • Wax Wraps are cost effective. Why buy 10 rolls of cling film a year when you can purchase just one Beeswax Wrap? You’ll save money and the environment!

  • Our Beeswax Wraps are prettier than cling film! Cling film does not come in wonderful pretty and fun patterns to not only protect your food, but also decorate it!

  • Beeswax Wraps do not use fossil fuels. The making of cling film involves a heavy consumption of fossil fuels, cling film itself is a byproduct of synthesising oil!

  • Beeswax Wraps support and invest in local beekeepers, helping to protect bees for future generations.
