From day dot we’ve wanted to be a business that gives back, that works with its community, and uplifts all the brilliant designers, makers and creators out there. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the help of so many friends and fellow business owners, and we want to make sure we share the community spirit and support we have received, and support the charities so near and dear to us.
We are very proud to announce our first charity design collaboration! Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that focuses on protecting our oceans, beaches, waves and wildlife. They have a particular focus on plastic-pollution and how it affects our seas and sea life, and work to create solutions to single-use rubbish which pollutes our beaches. They organise regular beach cleans and work with communities to engage and galvanise people into action. 10% of sales from our charity pack will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage to support the brilliant work they do.
First our first charity design, we’ve collaborated with Bristol based designer and Surfers Against Sewage supporter Jenny Holmes. We chatted with Jenny about her design-work and inspiration.
How and why did you get into design, and why did you choose the process you used?
I’ve always loved art. From as far back as I remember I was always drawing or creating something. A few years ago, I moved back to Bristol after living in London for ten years and it was then when I rediscovered my love of nature and art almost simultaneously. For me the two are intrinsically linked. I started block printing three years ago and I love the hands-on nature of it. It can be as detailed or as simple as I want it to be whilst at the same time totally unpredictable.
What are your top places to visit for inspiration? Where did the inspiration for the design come from?
I’m inspired by nature and the environment. Walking in the countryside or along the coast is where I get most of my inspiration. We also have amazing wildlife in our towns and cities, you just need to slow down and look around you.
My inspiration for this print came from some time I spent working on a turtle conservation project in Costa Rica. Our oceans are full of amazing wildlife. Everyone has a part to play in conserving our natural environment in any small way they can. A reduction in plastic usage is vital which is why Beeswax Wraps and products like it are so great!
What do you enjoy most about the creative process?
I love the unexpected outcomes that creative processes can lead to. This especially applies to block printing, I can draw and plan out my design, but the outcome is quite often surprising. I enjoy being able to experiment and learn new techniques as well as sharing skills with other artists/makers.
What else do you design? Where can we find out more about you?
I produce limited edition, original pieces of art all inspired by wildlife/nature in some way. From these I then design notebooks, enamel badges, bags and other items.
