Plastic Free Christmas Presents

Plastic Free DIY Beauty Gifts

We are very fortunate at The Beeswax Wraps workshop to have the lovely Claudi working with us! She is our plastic free guru who has been living without single use plastics for over 3 years now. We thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of her knowledge to have a DIY eco night making plastic free Christmas presents at the workshop. We figured our friends and family have probably got enough of our Beeswax Wraps now! It was also just nice to have a team building evening where we had a chance to chat with everyone we work with! A cherished time where we aren’t talking shop, just talking life. We had a lovely time making eco Christmas gifts that are as plastic free as can be. With Claudi guiding the way we all went home with some lovely plastic free gifts.

Ingredients

·       Approx 12-15g of beeswax

·       3-4 tablespoons of olive oil

·       3 tablespoons of sunflower oil (note a tablespoon is 15ml)

·       An essential oil of your choice (5 drops max)

Instructions:

1.     Put some water in a saucepan, sit a bowl on top of the pan, making sure the water level is below the bottom of the bowl.

2.     Place wax block in the bowl and add the oils – 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil. Keep the remaining olive oil to one side for later.

3.     Heat water in pan gently with the lip balm mix in the bowl on top. DO NOT LET WATER BOIL OVER. (Beeswax melts at 65C)

4.     Stir occasionally, will take approximately 10 minutes to melt

5.     Test the balm- Remove from heat. Use the tablespoon to put a few drops of the mix on a small plate. It will quickly cool and set, so you can test it. For a softer balm add the remaining oil to the mix and stir in.

6.     Allow mixture to cool, if you choose to use an essential oil, now is the time to add a maximum of 4-5 drops in to the mix and stir in.

7.     Spoon mixture into tins, leave to cool.

Simple variations:

·       Use sweet almond oil and mix it with olive and sunflower oil. You can also replace the sunflower with rapeseed or hemp oil.

Claudi has a wonderful website full of plastic free recipes and resources, it is definitely worth a visit to help you on your plastic free journey. Below are a few of Claudi’s top tips.

5 Top Tips about living as plastic free as can be from Claudi are:

·      If you can’t find an item that is completely plastic free buy it in big quantities and share with others. Do a DIY night so that if you have to use plastic in some ways it is only one item that has plastic not 10 smaller items. Doing things in a large group reduces the waste and the plastic.

·      Really look at the whole supply chain of an item. There is hidden plastic in the weirdest places.

·      Don’t be afraid to just ask to use your own container

·      When you are buying an item look at the packaging. Ask yourself: Can you re-use is? How is it made? How far did it have to travel to get to me?

·      Create your own mental checklist when you are wanting to purchase something. Some examples to ask yourself are: Is the item you are wanting to buy needed urgently in your life? Do you need it in this specific format? Can you get it in a different way? Can you borrow, re-use or share it?

We hope you have enjoyed our little post, we will be posting up more plastic free Christmas tips soon!
