Becoming B Corporation Certified

Ever since we started making beeswax wraps in our kitchen, we knew we wanted to do things differently. Our mission is to create a business where people and the planet are at the centre of what we do and inspire the products we sell.

Having come from a working background of extremely long hours with little reward (other than lining the top bosses pockets!), we wanted to build a company that had the community and care at its heart. Turns out, it’s not as difficult as those big bosses would have you believe!

We first learned about B Corp when Tom spotted the logo in a Finisterre store in early 2019. We had been looking for a way to measure the positive impact of what we were already doing, and a structure for setting targets to improve on our sustainability through every avenue of the business.

About B Corp

A little run down if it’s not something you are already familiar with:

  • B Corp is a certification that measures a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community, and environment.
  • For you, the customer, B Corp serves as a standards marker. It ensures the company you are buying from “meet(s) the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose”. In other words, that it doesn’t just flog products with no care or consideration for the people and planet. B Corp demonstrates businesses that are working to have a positive impact on the community, society and the environment.

B Corp has an informative FAQ section to help you better understand what they do, how they work and who they work with.

The B Corp Certification Process

The process itself did take a while, but it was an extremely positive opportunity. It allowed us to understand the choices we had made up until this point and the impact we had on our community and wider network. B Corp’s certification takes into account your business type, size, and location to help personalise goals to work best for you.

During the B Corp certification, we learned a lot about what we want to achieve at The Beeswax Wrap Co. Until this point our decisions had been very intuitive, which had been successful, but we wanted clearer goals and more structure.

Our B Corp impact report has given us a stronger direction. We want to work on the eco-credentials throughout our supply chain, to uplift and support our team, to reduce waste and our carbon impact, and to give back to the community and causes that matter to us.

As well as defining our goals and giving us targets to work towards, being part of the B Corp community introduced us to so many like-minded and inspiring businesses, individuals and charities and allowed us to collaborate and support one another.

Our Positive Impact

  1. We’ve raised over £8,000 for charities since 2018.
  2. Waste has been reduced by 20% in the past twelve months.
  3. All* of our energy comes from solar panels on our workshop roof. (*during dark months we may require energy from the main grid, but in the light months we produce excess energy and give back more than we used to the main grid)
  4. Our wraps are still handmade using sustainably sourced materials and GOTS certified organic cotton.
  5. We support our staff by being a Living Wage Employer. We also offer flexible working solutions and two additional days’ holiday for volunteering.

Our Goals

  • We’re moving towards a carbon balanced and more sustainable packaging option with World Land Trust.
  • Working to reduce our carbon footprint by understanding and setting goals with The Planet Mark.
  • We’re cutting waste further by developing new ideas, solutions, and products that work to eliminate waste.
  • Working to educate and inspire our supply chain, collaborators and wholesalers by sharing knowledge and ideas.
  • Constantly reviewing and researching more ethical and sustainable materials for making our wraps and our packaging.

Did You Know?

  • Only 9% of the plastic waste produced since the 1950s has been recycled!
  • 10 rivers in the world discharge 90% of all plastic marine debris.
  • If a family of four, who use clingfilm to wrap four sandwiches every day, switched to using our beeswax wraps, they would save over 500 metres of cling film from going into landfills every year!
